Ban Ki-moon Praises Algeria’s Food Security Strategy, Green Belt Rehabilitation and Anti-Desertification Efforts
By Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Former United Nations Secretary-General and President of the Assembly and Board of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Ban Ki-moon, has praised Algeria’s growing role in advancing food security, sustainable agriculture and environmental resilience, highlighting the country’s efforts to expand strategic crop production, promote Saharan agriculture and combat desertification.
During a meeting with Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, Ban Ki-moon commended Algeria’s contribution to food security initiatives, particularly those implemented within the framework of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s national development programme.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the discussions focused on strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening agricultural production, developing strategic crops, expanding agricultural activity in southern regions and ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources as part of Algeria’s broader food security agenda.
The talks also addressed food security challenges facing both Algeria and the African continent, with both sides examining opportunities for enhanced cooperation, knowledge exchange and the sharing of expertise in agricultural development and climate adaptation.
Ban Ki-moon and Minister Oualid reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in support of sustainable development objectives, particularly in the face of mounting climate-related challenges affecting agricultural systems, natural resources and rural communities.
The former UN chief’s visit coincided with the inauguration of the Algiers office of the Global Green Growth Institute, a development expected to deepen cooperation on sustainability, environmental governance and climate resilience initiatives.
During the discussions, Ban Ki-moon also praised Algeria’s large-scale reforestation campaigns aimed at rehabilitating degraded ecosystems and restoring natural landscapes. He stressed the importance of sharing Algeria’s experience with other countries facing similar environmental challenges, describing such initiatives as valuable contributions to strengthening vegetation cover and enhancing ecological resilience.
Particular attention was given to Algeria’s long-standing experience in combating desertification, notably through the Green Dam project. Ban Ki-moon welcomed ongoing rehabilitation efforts undertaken within the framework of the state’s climate adaptation strategy, noting the project’s importance in protecting arid and semi-arid regions while contributing to sustainable development and environmental restoration.
The meeting underscored the growing convergence between Algeria’s agricultural and environmental policies and broader international efforts to address food insecurity, land degradation and climate change, reinforcing the country’s emerging role as a regional actor in sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
