Lourenço Visits Algeria’s Fouka 2 Desalination Plant as Algiers Expands Water Security Strategy
By Dr. Hana Saada
Angolan President João Lourenço visited Algeria’s Fouka 2 seawater desalination plant on Tuesday, as Algiers showcased its expanding desalination capacity and nationally led water-security infrastructure strategy.
The visit took place in the presence of Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab, Water Resources Minister Lounès Bouzegza, Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi and Tipasa Governor Mohamed Amine Benchaoulia.
Officials presented the operational system and production process of the Fouka 2 facility, inaugurated in February 2025, which has a production capacity of 300,000 cubic metres per day.
Daoudi stated that Algeria has become Africa’s largest producer of desalinated water, ranking second in both the Arab world and the Mediterranean region. He added that national desalination capacity is projected to rise to 5.6 million cubic metres per day by 2030, from 3.7 million currently.
He further announced the launch of a new national programme involving six additional desalination plants along Algeria’s coastline with a combined future output of 1.8 million cubic metres per day.
Fouka 2 forms part of a broader programme that includes four other operational plants in El Tarf, Boumerdes, Oran and Béjaïa, each with identical production capacity, bringing the programme’s total output to 1.5 million cubic metres daily.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening Algeria’s long-term water security and potable water supply through domestic expertise and modern technologies.
