Opel Confirms Algeria Manufacturing Investment with Local Engine Production Project
German automaker Opel has formalised plans to establish an integrated vehicle manufacturing facility in Algeria, including what would become the country’s first locally produced automotive engines, marking a major step in Algeria’s industrial integration strategy.

BERLIN — German automaker Opel has officially confirmed plans to establish an integrated automotive manufacturing facility in Algeria, including a local engine production project that would make it the first car manufacturer to produce engines in the country.
The announcement was made on Friday on the sidelines of the Algerian-German Economic Forum in Berlin during the official visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Germany.
As part of the visit, Opel Chief Executive Officer Florian Huettl was received by President Tebboune. Following their meeting, Opel signed a Letter of Intent with AGM Holding Company SpA, represented by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Faouzi El Kebir, paving the way for a project to manufacture automotive engines locally in Algeria.
The initiative represents a significant milestone for Algeria’s automotive industry, aligning with government efforts to deepen industrial integration, expand local manufacturing capacity and accelerate technology transfer.
If implemented, Opel would become the first international automaker to manufacture engines in Algeria, moving beyond vehicle assembly towards higher value-added industrial production.
The announcement marks a new phase in Opel’s international expansion strategy while underscoring the growing strategic importance of the Algerian market for the German manufacturer.
The formalisation follows a series of high-level visits by Opel executives to Algeria in recent weeks, including CEO Florian Huettl and the company’s regional director, signalling accelerating negotiations ahead of Friday’s agreement in Berlin.
According to the Letter of Intent, the future industrial complex will incorporate an engine manufacturing unit alongside vehicle production facilities.
Huettl described the project as a strategic component of Opel’s international development plans, highlighting Algeria’s potential both as a promising domestic market and as a future regional industrial hub.
The planned local production of engines is regarded as one of the project’s defining features, reflecting Algeria’s objective of developing a fully integrated automotive industry based on local value creation, technology transfer and workforce development.
Opel intends to implement its “local for local” manufacturing model in Algeria, producing vehicles domestically to meet national market demand while contributing to the development of a broader industrial ecosystem.
The company also aims to support the emergence of an integrated supply chain by encouraging the growth of local component manufacturers, subcontractors and specialised industrial suppliers across the automotive value chain.
Several key aspects of the project remain under discussion, including the location of the manufacturing complex, the vehicle models to be assembled, the types of engines covered by the agreement, the implementation timetable and the plant’s annual production capacity.
These details are expected to be announced progressively as the partnership advances.
The investment announcement came during President Tebboune’s official visit to Germany, which focused on expanding Algerian-German cooperation across industry, energy, technology and investment, with automotive manufacturing identified as one of the priority sectors for future bilateral collaboration.
