ALGIERS — Electricity was fully restored across 16 Algerian provinces early Wednesday after an exceptional technical failure at the Sidi Okba electrical installation in Biskra Province disrupted power supply overnight, prompting an emergency response personally monitored by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb from the National Electricity Grid Control Centre in Algiers.
Ghrieb, accompanied by Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Mourad Adjal and Presidential Adviser for Communication Kamel Sidi Said, visited the national control centre to oversee restoration efforts and follow the progress of operations until electricity supply was fully reinstated.
According to the Algerian Press Service (APS), power was successfully restored to all affected provinces by approximately 4:00 a.m., following coordinated technical interventions carried out by Sonelgaz engineers and operational teams after the disruption occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Following the completion of the operation, the Prime Minister conveyed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s appreciation to officials of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, as well as Sonelgaz executives, engineers and field personnel, commending what he described as their rapid response in resolving the technical failure.
Government highlights resilience of national electricity infrastructure
Speaking after supervising the restoration operation, Ghrieb praised the performance of Sonelgaz’s technical teams, noting that they had managed to restore the system within hours despite the complexity of the malfunction.
“We have Sonelgaz executives and engineers who completed the operation in just a few hours,” he said, adding that “there are countries that have taken 48 hours to repair a similar failure.”
The Prime Minister also thanked, on behalf of President Tebboune and the government, all personnel involved in restoring electricity to the provinces affected by the outage.
He further described Algeria’s ability to operate a national electricity grid control centre as “a source of pride for the country’s electrical industry,” underscoring the strategic importance of centralized management of the national power system.
Energy Minister Mourad Adjal confirmed that the Sidi Okba electrical installation had been fully returned to service and that electricity had been restored across all 16 provinces affected by the disruption.
He attributed the swift recovery to sustained state investment in the energy sector, saying the country’s electricity infrastructure and operational capabilities had enabled engineers to resolve what officials described as an exceptional technical failure within a record timeframe.
