President Tebboune Says Peaceful Opposition Is Welcome in Algeria, Reaffirms Right to Criticise Within Respect for National Values

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Algeria welcomes political opposition expressed through peaceful debate and constructive alternatives, reaffirming that every Algerian has the right to criticise while stressing that public discourse should remain respectful of the country’s traditions and reject insults or incitement.

BERLIN — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed on Wednesday that peaceful political opposition remains welcome in Algeria, saying citizens are free to express criticism and alternative viewpoints provided such debate is conducted respectfully and within the framework of the country’s values and traditions.

Addressing members of the Algerian community in Germany during his official visit to Berlin, Tebboune said political pluralism and constructive criticism contribute to strengthening democratic life when based on ideas rather than personal attacks.

“Those in opposition are welcome, as is anyone who expresses disagreement in a civilised manner by presenting ideas and alternatives. That is what enables Algeria to move further along the path of democracy,” the president said.

Tebboune reiterated remarks he said he had made previously in televised addresses, emphasising that every Algerian has the right to criticise public affairs.

“Every Algerian has the right to criticise, but criticism should respect our traditions and our values. Insults and abuse lead only to hatred and violence,” he said.

The president added that disagreement should be regarded as a legitimate component of public debate rather than a source of division.

“Anyone who disagrees is free to say so and present his or her point of view. Such practices enrich the national process, and whoever does not accept that has misunderstood its purpose,” he said.

The remarks were delivered during Tebboune’s meeting with members of the Algerian diaspora in Germany, held on the sidelines of his two-day official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, where discussions with German leaders have focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in energy, industry, investment and technology.
