President Tebboune Weighs in on Elections, Women in Politics, Pope’s Visit, Mali Relations, and UAE OPEC Withdrawal

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Algeria’s electoral process is protected from administrative interference, which he described as “strictly prohibited,” during a televised interview to be broadcast on Saturday evening.

The interview covers domestic governance, institutional reforms, regional diplomacy and global economic developments.

He said women’s political participation should be based on competence and ideas, and reiterated that state institutions play no role in influencing electoral outcomes.

On anti-corruption, the President said the country had eliminated networks engaged in over-invoicing, only to face new ones involved in under-invoicing.

Speaking on the situation in Mali, he said he was “speaking from the heart,” stressing that Algeria’s position reflects genuine affection for the country.

On energy markets, he described the United Arab Emirates’ withdrawal from OPEC and OPEC+ as a “non-event,” adding that Saudi Arabia remains the group’s central anchor, referring to it as “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a brotherly country.”

In a further reference to questions of identity and history, the President called for confronting “myths” attributing Algeria’s origins to the colonial period. He cited remarks attributed to Pope Leo XIV regarding the deep historical roots of the country extending to before Saint Augustine, as part of a broader affirmation of Algeria’s long-standing civilisational heritage.
