Lounès Bouzegza Inspects Algiers Water Infrastructure, Urges Rapid Repairs and Expanded Reuse of Treated Water
By Dr. Hana Saada
Water Resources Minister Lounès Bouzegza carried out an unannounced visit on Saturday to several water infrastructure sites in Algiers, focusing on operational continuity of drinking water supply and sanitation services.
He began at the Central Directorate of Major Works in Ain Naâdja, where he called for the provision of equipment and spare parts to address potential failures in pumping systems and ensure uninterrupted public service.
He stressed the need for rapid repairs and sustained operational readiness across all facilities.
The minister then inspected the main pumping station at Koudiat Acerdoune Bridge in Gue de Constantine, which supplies a significant share of Algiers’ water needs, reviewing its condition following recent maintenance operations.
He underlined the importance of preventive maintenance to improve efficiency and service performance.
At the Ain Naâdja customer service agency, he reviewed billing and payment systems, including digital and remote options, as part of efforts to simplify procedures and advance the digitisation of public water services.
He concluded his visit at the Birkhadem wastewater treatment plant, where he examined its remote-control system and full treatment chain, from intake to tertiary purification using ultraviolet technology.
He called for expanding the reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture, industry and urban uses, including irrigation of green spaces and cleaning of public areas, in line with the national strategy to conserve potable water resources.
