Professor Chems Eddine Chitour laid to rest in Algiers amid official and academic tributes
By Dr. Hana Saada
Chems Eddine Chitour, a member of the Council of the Nation and former government minister, was laid to rest on Monday at the cemetery of Baba Hassen Cemetery, in a ceremony marked by strong official and academic attendance.
The funeral drew senior political figures, including the Speaker of the Council of the Nation Azzouz Nasri, government ministers, former ministers, parliamentarians and university academics, who gathered to pay tribute to a figure widely recognised for his academic career and public service.

During the ceremony, Saad Arous, head of the parliamentary group of the presidential third, highlighted the late professor’s contributions to higher education, scientific research and government work, stressing his commitment to knowledge and national priorities.
Speakers and tributes emphasised Mr Chitour’s intellectual discipline, humility, integrity and strong commitment to the public interest—qualities that, colleagues said, defined both his academic and political trajectory.
His death marks the loss of a prominent scientific voice and public figure in Algeria, whose legacy is expected to continue shaping academic and policy circles in the years ahead.
