Vegetable Price Spike Seen as Temporary, Says Algerian Traders’ Union

By Dr. Hana Saada

A recent rise in vegetable prices is a temporary fluctuation rather than a sign of shortage, according to the General Union of Algerian Traders and Craftsmen.

Prices of everyday produce—tomatoes, carrots and garlic—have increased in recent days, fuelling consumer concern. The union’s secretary-general, Issam Bedrissi, said the uptick reflects seasonal dynamics, not a market breakdown.

He cited climatic variation, harvest conditions and the transition between production cycles as the main drivers. The current phase corresponds to a routine gap between outgoing and incoming crops, temporarily tightening supply. With new harvests expected shortly, he said, market availability should improve and prices ease.

A parallel assessment from the Algerian Consumer Protection and Guidance Association points to deeper frictions. Its president, Mustapha Zebdi, argues that current price levels also reflect imbalances along the production chain, from planning to distribution.

He highlights rising input costs, uneven resource management and the role of intermediaries in amplifying price movements. These conditions, he notes, can open the door to speculative practices that weigh directly on purchasing power.

The overall picture points to a short-term supply squeeze against a backdrop of structural inefficiencies, with prices expected to stabilise as fresh output reaches the market.
