Algeria’s Political Parties Regain Momentum Ahead of 2026 Legislative Elections
By Dr. Hana Saada
With the 2026 legislative elections approaching, Algeria’s political scene is experiencing a renewed pace of activity, as parties move to reorganise internally and mobilise their grassroots structures. The electoral contest, scheduled for 2 July, is increasingly shaping political dynamics, particularly following the expansion of constituencies from 58 to 69 and the allocation of 407 seats, including 12 for the Algerian community abroad.
According to Azzedine Nemiri, a political science lecturer at the University of Guelma, the current climate reflects a notable shift compared with previous cycles. He attributes this to recent legal adjustments that have introduced greater flexibility and clarity into the electoral framework, thereby facilitating access to candidacy and encouraging broader participation.
He notes that a visible reduction in electoral boycott tendencies among opposition actors marks a significant turning point, suggesting a gradual reintegration of previously disengaged political forces into the electoral process. In his view, this evolution has been supported by provisions in the revised electoral law aimed at strengthening transparency and restoring confidence in the process.
Nemiri further argues that the simultaneous presence of ruling parties and opposition formations enhances the credibility of the vote and opens the prospect of a more pluralistic and representative National Assembly. He adds that this stage could allow for the emergence of a more structured opposition capable of reinforcing parliamentary oversight and rebalancing institutional dynamics.
He also highlights an increasing alignment between institutional reforms and rising civic awareness, noting a growing emphasis among voters on competence and credibility as key criteria in political selection.
Political analyst Hakim Boughrara similarly observes that the political class has evolved since the reform of the electoral code. He points to measures aimed at improving female representation, including reserved seats, as well as adjustments to candidacy rules in smaller municipalities designed to increase procedural flexibility.
He describes these reforms as part of a gradual adaptation of the legal framework based on lessons drawn from previous elections and feedback from political actors, particularly regarding obstacles faced by women candidates in certain regions.
Boughrara also refers to measures intended to reinforce electoral transparency, including the deployment of control agents in areas outside their place of residence, a mechanism designed to limit local influence and strengthen neutrality in oversight. He argues that these adjustments collectively respond to longstanding demands from political parties and contribute to reshaping the conditions of electoral competition.
