Algeria, Angola Explore New Energy Partnerships Across Oil and Gas Value Chain

ALGIERS, June 16 — Algeria and Angola have agreed to deepen cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector and explore new partnership opportunities across the oil and gas value chain, following high-level talks held by videoconference on Monday.

The discussions brought together Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, and Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas, Diamantino Pedro Azevedo, alongside senior officials and executives from both countries’ energy sectors.

The Algerian delegation included Sonatrach Chief Executive Officer Noureddine Daoudi, National Agency for the Valorisation of Hydrocarbon Resources (ALNAFT) President Samir Bekhti, and senior ministry officials.

Angola was represented by the chairman of the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG), Paulino Fernando de Carvalho Jerónimo, Sonangol Chief Executive Officer Sebastião Pai Querido Gaspar Martins, and Secretary of State for Petroleum and Gas José Alexandre Barroso.

According to a statement from Algeria’s Ministry of Energy, the two sides reviewed prospects for bilateral cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening partnerships across the entire industry value chain.

Discussions focused on opportunities in hydrocarbon exploration and production, refining, petrochemicals and specialised training programmes.

The meeting also examined prospects for cooperation between Algeria’s state-owned energy company Sonatrach and Angolan energy firms through knowledge-sharing initiatives, technology transfer, capacity-building programmes and the development of industrial and technological partnerships with high added value.

As part of these efforts, the two sides agreed to organise a working mission involving Sonatrach executives and technical experts to Angola in the coming months. The mission aims to advance technical consultations, identify concrete areas of cooperation and facilitate the implementation of mutually beneficial projects.

Arkab stressed the importance of expanding Algerian-Angolan cooperation into new strategic sectors commensurate with the strength of bilateral relations between the two countries.

He noted that the official visit of Angolan President João Lourenço to Algeria in May, which resulted in the signing of 11 cooperation agreements, had injected new momentum into bilateral relations and enhanced prospects for economic collaboration.

The Algerian minister reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with African countries and contributing to the development of an integrated continental economy based on sustainable development, energy security and South-South cooperation, in line with the objectives of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

For his part, Azevedo praised the quality of relations between Angola and Algeria, highlighting Algeria’s recognised expertise in hydrocarbon exploration, production and the development of the oil and gas industry.

He expressed Angola’s interest in leveraging Algeria’s experience to reinforce bilateral cooperation and support the economic development ambitions of both countries.
