Algerian Parties Intensify Calls for High Voter Turnout as Legislative Campaign Enters Seventh Day

By Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS, June 16 — Algeria’s campaign for the July 2 legislative elections entered its seventh day on Monday, with political leaders across the spectrum intensifying calls for strong voter participation and highlighting their respective priorities on youth engagement, economic development and institutional strengthening.

Campaign events held across several provinces underscored a broad consensus among participating parties on the importance of voter mobilisation, amid efforts to boost public engagement ahead of the ballot.

Speaking at a rally in Tissemsilt, Abdelali Hassani Cherif, president of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), urged young Algerians to play a greater role in national development by placing their skills and expertise at the service of the country.

Addressing supporters at the Mouloud-Kacem-Naït-Belkacem Cultural Centre, Hassani Cherif called on young voters to participate actively in the economic and social development process and to turn out in large numbers on election day.

He said the MSP remains committed to maintaining close contact with citizens and addressing their concerns regarding local and national development. He also pointed to the development momentum witnessed in Tissemsilt, particularly through programmes implemented in the Ouarsenis region.

The MSP leader said his party’s programme prioritises education, healthcare, purchasing power, job creation and measures aimed at protecting young people from social challenges.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Dane, a member of the National Coordination Body of the El Bina Movement, called for broad participation in the upcoming elections during campaign stops in Ouled Djellal and Biskra.

Representing El Bina president Abdelkader Bengrina, Dane said the July 2 vote would contribute to advancing the “New Algeria” project and urged voters to select candidates based on competence.

He highlighted Ouled Djellal’s agricultural potential, particularly in date production, describing the province as capable of becoming a leading agricultural hub.

Addressing supporters in Biskra, he encouraged residents of the Ziban region to support El Bina candidates, while reiterating the movement’s emphasis on local development and economic opportunities.

In Bordj Bou Arreridj, Mohamed Douibi, secretary-general of the Ennahda Movement, described the legislative elections as a key milestone for renewing political elites and strengthening democratic representation.

Speaking during the inauguration of his party’s local campaign office, Douibi stressed the need for wide participation, adding that Ennahda had selected candidates based on competence and would contest the elections in 11 constituencies inside and outside Algeria.

For his part, Lamine Osmani, president of the Sawt Echaâb party, called on citizens in Mascara to vote in large numbers to reinforce Algeria’s constitutional institutions, particularly the National People’s Assembly (APN).

During campaign activities in the municipalities of Bouhenni and Mactaa Douz, Osmani said the elections represented an opportunity to strengthen parliamentary representation and restore public confidence in state institutions.

He said Sawt Echaâb’s programme is based on proximity to citizens through continuous engagement by elected representatives and a stronger focus on addressing local concerns.

Osmani added that his party had selected candidates according to criteria of competence, integrity and transparency, arguing that Algeria’s current development challenges require a strong and effective political class.

Meanwhile, Workers’ Party (PT) Secretary-General Louisa Hanoune pledged that her party’s candidates would faithfully represent citizens’ concerns if elected.

Addressing a rally at the Guenfoud Hamlaoui Cultural Centre in M’sila, Hanoune said the National People’s Assembly remains an essential institution for conveying citizens’ aspirations and defending their interests.

She reiterated her call for mass participation in the elections and said the PT had adopted a rigorous candidate selection process aimed at identifying individuals capable of implementing the party’s programme and serving the public interest.

Hanoune also described the upcoming elections as an opportunity to transform the aspirations of young people into tangible political action by enabling them to represent citizens within the legislature.

The July 2 legislative elections are taking place amid ongoing efforts by authorities to strengthen political participation and renew elected institutions as part of Algeria’s broader reform agenda.
