African Development: General Khalifa of the Fayda Tijaniyya Praises Algeria’s Role

KAOLACK (Senegal) — The General Khalifa of the Fayda Tijaniyya in Senegal, Sheikh Mohamed El-Mahi Ibrahim Niass, has praised Algeria’s role in serving the Holy Quran and supporting development efforts across the African continent.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the annual “Khetamates” (Quran completion sessions), held last Wednesday in the Senegalese city of Kaolack, the spiritual leader described Algeria’s experience in promoting the Quran as a “model to be followed.”
He highlighted Algeria’s “significant efforts” in the service of the Holy Book, citing the establishment of Quranic institutes and schools, the organisation of international recitation competitions, the training of imams and reciters, as well as the printing and distribution of copies of the Holy Quran both domestically and abroad.
Much of his address focused on his recent visit to Algeria, during which he expressed gratitude for the “warm reception” he received, underscoring the strong cultural and religious ties between Algeria and West African Muslim communities.
The Khalifa also praised Algerian religious and academic institutions for promoting a moderate Islamic discourse and reinforcing values of tolerance and balance, stating that these initiatives represent an important legacy for Africa and the wider Muslim world.
He further noted that Algeria holds a “special place among African Muslims,” referring to its historical struggle and continued contributions to continental causes. He described Algeria as one of the key pillars supporting African independence, sovereignty, and ongoing development efforts across the region.
