Algeria Reaffirms Support for UN-Led Western Sahara Process During Attaf–de Mistura Meeting
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf received United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Staffan de Mistura on Monday as part of the UN official’s regional tour aimed at advancing efforts to revive negotiations over the disputed territory.
According to a statement issued by Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on ongoing diplomatic efforts to move forward the political process concerning Western Sahara and to facilitate a negotiated settlement acceptable to the parties to the conflict — the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front.
The discussions reviewed avenues for advancing the UN-led process in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and with the objective of guaranteeing the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, the ministry said.
During the meeting, Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the efforts of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and his Personal Envoy to relaunch the negotiation process.
The minister underscored the importance of engaging in talks without preconditions and stressed the need to create favourable conditions for direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front aimed at reaching what he described as a “just, lasting and definitive solution” to the Western Sahara issue.
Attaf also highlighted the “central role” of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in maintaining regional stability.
Reiterating Algeria’s long-standing position, he called for full respect for international legality and relevant United Nations resolutions concerning Western Sahara, describing the issue as a matter of decolonisation.
De Mistura’s visit to Algeria forms part of a broader regional tour conducted in the framework of ongoing UN efforts to revive the political process on Western Sahara, a territory listed by the United Nations as a non-self-governing territory.
