Algeria–Tunisia Customs Services Strengthen Cooperation in Annaba to Combat Smuggling and Trade Fraud
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ANNABA, June 17 — Customs officials from Algeria and Tunisia convened this week in Annaba for the fifth evaluation meeting between regional directors of both countries’ customs administrations, focusing on reinforcing bilateral coordination in the fight against smuggling and commercial fraud.
The meeting brought together representatives of the Algerian General Directorate of Customs alongside senior officials and technical cadres from both sides, according to official sources.
The discussions form part of the implementation of recommendations issued by the Joint Algerian–Tunisian Commission on Customs Cooperation, as well as the Joint Committee tasked with combating cross-border land smuggling and trade fraud.
Participants reviewed the level of implementation of decisions adopted during previous sessions, assessing operational progress and identifying areas requiring further coordination between the two customs authorities.
According to officials present, the meeting also provided an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation mechanisms aimed at intensifying joint efforts against smuggling networks, commercial fraud, and other forms of transnational criminal activity.
Both sides underlined that enhanced coordination is essential to protecting national economic interests and ensuring the security and integrity of commercial exchanges between Algeria and Tunisia, particularly in border regions where illicit trade networks remain active.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to deepen operational cooperation and improve information-sharing mechanisms between customs services in order to strengthen border management and economic security frameworks.
