UN Committee on Decolonisation: Algeria Reaffirms Support for a Durable Settlement of the Western Sahara Question
BY Dr. Hana Saada
UNITED NATIONS, June 17 — Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, stated that Algeria will remain committed to supporting all sincere efforts aimed at reaching a just and definitive settlement to the question of Western Sahara.
Speaking during the substantive session of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (Committee of 24), Bendjama noted that the Western Sahara issue, described as the last colony in Africa and listed on the committee’s agenda since 1963, will remain under consideration until the Sahrawi people exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.
He said that the fundamental principles governing the decolonization process are clear, adding that legal references, including international jurisprudence, confirm the status of Western Sahara as a non-self-governing territory and affirm the right of its people to self-determination.
Regarding recent developments, he referred to Algeria’s participation in ongoing political processes as a neighbouring country and observer state, and reiterated calls for direct talks between the two parties to the conflict (Morocco and the Polisario Front), as well as support for the efforts of UN Secretary-Generals and their special envoys.
He added that the resumption of direct talks between Morocco and the Polisario Front under UN and US auspices represents a positive signal, while noting that such negotiations have taken place previously without reaching a final settlement.
He further stated that the objective of the current political process lies in establishing a dynamic based on trust, good faith, and sincere engagement, and warned that continued escalation of rhetoric, policies of fait accompli, preconditions, and disregard for the other party would deepen frustration and risk stalling the process.
