Sonatrach, Germany’s VNG AG Sign Memorandum to Explore Green Hydrogen and Methane Reduction Projects
ALGIERS, June 17 — Algeria’s state energy company Sonatrach signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday with German utility firm VNG AG to explore cooperation in green hydrogen development and methane emissions reduction, according to a company statement.
The signing ceremony took place at Sonatrach’s headquarters in Algiers in the presence of Chief Executive Officer Noureddine Daoudi, VNG AG Supervisory Board Chairman Ulf Heitmüller, and board member Hans-Joachim Polk.
The memorandum aims to examine potential areas of cooperation, particularly in green hydrogen, ammonia production, and initiatives to reduce methane emissions across the hydrocarbons value chain.
Sonatrach said the agreement builds on discussions initiated under a previous framework signed between the two parties on 20 December 2022, reflecting what it described as continuity in bilateral energy dialogue.
The company stated that the partnership seeks to develop concrete joint actions in support of decarbonisation efforts and the global energy transition, while strengthening technological and industrial cooperation between Algeria and Germany.
According to Sonatrach, the agreement underscores mutual trust between the two entities and their shared commitment to addressing environmental challenges in the hydrocarbons sector, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
The state-owned group added that the initiative aligns with its broader strategy to support cleaner energy pathways and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change through gradual diversification and emission-reduction projects.
