Air Algérie Expands Strategic Position as Royal Air Maroc Reduces Network Amid Structural Pressures
— By Dr. Hana Saada
Royal Air Maroc’s decision to suspend several routes linking Morocco to France, Belgium and multiple African capitals reflects not only the impact of elevated aviation fuel costs, but also deeper structural constraints weighing on its operating model in an increasingly volatile regional and global environment.
The Moroccan carrier, almost entirely state-owned, has cited rising jet fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East alongside weakening demand on selected routes. However, the adjustments come against a broader backdrop of sustained economic pressures affecting key sectors of the Moroccan economy, including inflationary trends, rising public debt, and persistent strains on household purchasing power.
Network contraction exposes structural vulnerabilities
The suspension of key European routes such as Marrakech–Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and Brussels carries particular significance given their importance for diaspora traffic, tourism flows and commercial exchange. More strategically, reductions across African destinations—including Bangui, Brazzaville, Kinshasa, Douala, Yaoundé and Libreville—underscore growing constraints on Morocco’s ambition to consolidate Royal Air Maroc as a continental aviation hub.
This recalibration is occurring at a moment of intensifying competition within African and Mediterranean aviation markets, where carriers are increasingly positioning themselves to absorb redistributed demand.
Air Algérie positioned for structural consolidation and expansion
Within this evolving landscape, Air Algérie is entering a structurally favourable phase, supported by state-backed investment in fleet renewal, network expansion and ongoing modernisation of airport infrastructure, notably at Algiers’ Houari Boumediene International Airport.
In contrast to Morocco’s energy import dependency, Algeria benefits from a strong hydrocarbon base, providing Air Algérie with a degree of insulation against aviation fuel volatility. This structural advantage enhances the carrier’s operational stability at a time when cost pressures are reshaping route profitability across the region.
The current contraction in Royal Air Maroc’s network opens tangible opportunities for Air Algérie to strengthen its presence on strategic corridors linking Africa, Europe and the Maghreb. Several of the suspended routes correspond to markets with significant diaspora demand and established travel flows, areas where Air Algérie is well positioned to scale capacity and improve connectivity.
Regional repositioning in aviation flows
The gradual expansion of Air Algérie’s footprint aligns with Algeria’s broader ambition to reinforce its role as a regional connectivity hub between Africa, Europe and the wider Mediterranean basin. Ongoing investments in fleet modernisation and infrastructure development are contributing to a more competitive positioning in markets where capacity gaps are emerging.
In this context, the divergence between the two national carriers reflects a broader regional realignment: while Royal Air Maroc is adjusting to immediate cost and demand pressures, Air Algérie is leveraging structural stability and state-supported investment momentum to consolidate its strategic positioning across key regional air corridors.
