Selma Malika Haddadi: Algeria Reaffirms African Engagement Through Structural Development and Security Cooperation

Speaking to APS on the occasion of Africa Day, celebrated annually on 25 May, Haddadi said Algeria’s approach is reflected in initiatives and projects with continent-wide economic and developmental impact, aimed at addressing structural vulnerabilities and the legacy of colonial rule.
She expressed confidence in Africa’s capacity to overcome its challenges through solidarity and unity, describing the continent as increasingly able to draw on its internal strengths following decades of colonialism and slavery.
Haddadi said Algeria, under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has consolidated its role as a key African actor through its historical positions in support of liberation movements, state sovereignty, and self-determination, adding that this approach reflects efforts to address historical imbalances and promote a more integrated and stable continent.
She noted Algeria’s contribution to peace and security in Africa, including support for political solutions to regional crises, expanded mediation efforts, rejection of external interference, and participation in counter-terrorism and anti-organised crime mechanisms through African frameworks.
On the economic front, she said Algeria has consistently supported continental integration, including backing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and financing development projects across several countries. She also highlighted strategic infrastructure initiatives such as the Trans-Saharan road project and regional communications interconnection schemes.
Haddadi further pointed to Algeria’s presidency of the African Peer Review Mechanism Forum (2024–2026), its role in African Union institutions, and its non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council, describing these positions as reinforcing its diplomatic weight on African issues.
She added that Algeria has expanded access for African students through scholarship programmes and the hosting of thousands of students across its universities and training institutions, while also positioning itself as a platform for regional economic and diplomatic engagement.
According to Haddadi, Algeria’s policy combines security and development priorities, particularly in the Sahel, where it continues to advocate coordinated African responses to terrorism and instability, alongside broader socio-economic development strategies.
