France–Algeria Dialogue Remains Essential, Says French Ambassador in Algiers Amid Gradual Diplomatic Re-engagement

The French Ambassador to Algeria Stéphane Romatet has stated that maintaining dialogue between Algiers and Paris remains “a necessity,” in a context marked by renewed efforts from both capitals to stabilise and gradually relaunch bilateral relations following several months of diplomatic tensions.

In remarks reported by French media outlets, the ambassador underscored the importance of preserving open channels of communication between the two countries, describing Algeria and France as being bound by “deep historical, economic and human ties.”

The comments come against a backdrop of strained relations over recent months, shaped by recurring disagreements on sensitive issues, including memory-related disputes, migration policy and judicial matters. Despite these frictions, both sides appear to be increasingly oriented towards de-escalation and the resumption of structured diplomatic engagement.

The French diplomat emphasised that bilateral cooperation remains essential across several strategic sectors, notably the economy, security and higher education. He also called for a “frank and respectful” dialogue as the primary framework for addressing outstanding differences.

On the Algerian side, authorities have repeatedly reaffirmed their commitment to relations based on mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs, while maintaining a consistent emphasis on safeguarding national sovereignty and strategic interests in external partnerships.

This emerging diplomatic phase may open the way for a gradual restoration of cooperation between Algiers and Paris, in a climate that several observers describe as more conducive to dialogue than in previous months.
