Algeria a key player in global energy agenda, says OLACDE chief

Andrés Rebolledo Smitmans, executive secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), has highlighted Algeria’s growing role in the global energy landscape, describing it as “a major country in the global energy agenda, particularly in hydrogen”.
Speaking to the press after a meeting with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Mr Rebolledo said the talks were “productive and important”, pointing to strengthening energy cooperation and broad prospects for partnership.
He noted that Algeria has been an observer member of OLADE for 25 years and said discussions focused on opportunities arising in a global energy environment marked by challenges and instability. Energy security, he added, remains central, with natural gas continuing to play a stabilising role in electricity markets and forming a key pillar of cooperation between Algeria, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Mr Rebolledo also underscored the potential for collaboration in emerging technologies, particularly green hydrogen and energy storage, describing them as areas where joint progress could be achieved. These issues, he said, were discussed during his meeting with the president.
He concluded by reaffirming OLADE’s intention to deepen cooperation with Algeria within a South-South framework, noting that the organisation brings together 27 member states and that Algeria holds a central place in the evolving global energy agenda.
