Algeria outlines development financing priorities at UN forum in New York
By Dr. Hana Saada
Abdelkrim Bouzerd is participating from Monday in the United Nations headquarters in New York in the Economic and Social Council forum on financing for development, covering the 2026 cycle.
During the general debate, which runs until 24 April, the finance minister is expected to present Algeria’s approach to development financing at both national and international levels.
The forum was opened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, alongside the President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock and the President of the Economic and Social Council Lok Bahadur Thapa. Participants committed to advancing the implementation of the “Seville Commitment”, adopted by heads of state and government in June.
Opening discussions also featured interventions by senior officials from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, who outlined ongoing efforts to support countries in mobilising financing for sustainable development projects.
UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed presented the Secretary-General’s 2026 report on sustainable development financing, warning that global economic instability, rising borrowing costs and geopolitical tensions—particularly in the Middle East—are increasing pressure on the poorest countries and risking setbacks on the Sustainable Development Goals.
