Algeria to tap 31,120-tonne fisheries quota in Mauritania under expanded maritime cooperation
By Dr. Hana Saada
Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid has visited Nouakchott to advance preparations for the implementation of a fisheries cooperation agreement that will allow Algeria to exploit a quota of 31,120 tonnes of marine resources in Mauritanian waters.
The visit included inspections of several fisheries facilities, notably the port of Tanit Port, which is expected to receive Algerian fishing vessels in the coming period under the terms of a bilateral protocol covering fisheries, maritime economy and aquaculture.
According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture, seven Algerian fishing vessels will be deployed to the port as part of the operational rollout of the agreement, which was concluded during the 20th session of the Algerian-Mauritanian Joint Commission held recently in Algeria.
Mr El-Mahdi Oualid made the visit alongside his Mauritanian counterpart Mohamedou Ould M’Haïmid, and on the margins of the 34th session of the FAO Regional Conference for Africa in Nouakchott.
Discussions included assessments of port infrastructure, logistics capacity and fish processing facilities, as well as engagement with Algerian shipowners involved in the agreement’s implementation. Officials said the arrangement is expected to open broader opportunities for investment and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.
The minister also met representatives of Mauritanian fisheries professionals and stakeholders involved in the execution of the bilateral cooperation framework.
