Algeria warns consumers over risks of unregulated e-commerce platforms
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria has stepped up warnings over the risks associated with online shopping, urging consumers to exercise caution when using unfamiliar digital platforms.
Amel Abdellatif, Minister of Internal Trade and Market Regulation, said in Algiers on Monday that heightened vigilance was essential, particularly when purchasing products of unknown origin that often fall outside regulatory oversight.
Speaking at a seminar on improving the business climate and regulating the national market, Ms Abdellatif stressed the importance of sustained consumer awareness, warning that many goods sold عبر lesser-known platforms evade quality and safety controls.
Officials said work is under way, in coordination with relevant stakeholders, to develop a national e-commerce strategy focused on governance and regulatory oversight. The plan is expected to include revisions to the legislative framework governing the sector.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen consumer protection while adapting market regulation to the rapid expansion of digital commerce.
