Algeria Accelerates IPv6 Adoption to Support Digital Infrastructure and Future Internet Growth
Government says the transition to IPv6 will strengthen network capacity, improve digital services and position Algeria more actively in regional and international internet governance.

ALGIERS — Algeria is stepping up efforts to accelerate the adoption of the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), as authorities seek to modernise the country’s digital infrastructure, expand network capacity and support the growing number of connected devices.
Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki chaired a meeting in Algiers on Tuesday dedicated to the future of the internet in Algeria, held in cooperation with the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC), the organisation responsible for managing and allocating internet number resources across Africa.
Speaking at the meeting, Zerrouki reaffirmed the government’s commitment to speeding up the deployment of IPv6, describing the transition as a strategic step toward improving the quality, resilience and scalability of Algeria’s digital services.
Discussions focused on internet governance, the protection of Algeria’s digital resources and strengthening the country’s participation in African and international organisations responsible for internet management and policy, according to a ministry statement.
Officials noted that the rapid global expansion of internet-connected devices has largely exhausted the available pool of IPv4 addresses, making the transition to IPv6 increasingly necessary. The newer protocol provides a vastly expanded address space capable of supporting billions of additional devices, while offering greater flexibility for future digital services and emerging technologies.
According to the ministry, wider deployment of IPv6 will enable Algeria’s internet infrastructure to accommodate continued growth in smartphones, computers and connected devices, improving network performance and supporting the country’s broader digital transformation strategy.
The initiative forms part of Algeria’s efforts to modernise its telecommunications sector, strengthen digital sovereignty and build the technological foundations needed to support the expansion of digital public services and the country’s evolving digital economy.
