ALGIERS — Algeria’s state-owned energy company Sonatrach on Tuesday launched construction of a new seawater desalination plant in the commune of Ben M’Hidi, in the northeastern wilaya of Skikda, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s water infrastructure.
The ceremony was led by Sonatrach Chief Executive Officer Noureddine Daoudi, alongside Skikda Governor Saïd Akhrouf, and attended by senior executives from Sonatrach External Activities and Support Holding (SAES), Algerian Desalination Company (ADC), the National Pipeline Company (ENAC), as well as local authorities and company officials, Sonatrach said in a statement.
Once operational, the desalination plant will have a production capacity of 140,000 cubic metres of water per day, including 100,000 cubic metres allocated to supplying the Skikda industrial zone and 40,000 cubic metres destined for Algérienne des Eaux (ADE).
According to Sonatrach, construction is expected to be completed within 24 months, with the project to be delivered in accordance with international engineering and technical standards.
The company said ADC, a Sonatrach subsidiary, will oversee project implementation, while construction works will be carried out by ENAC, another subsidiary of the state-owned group.
Sonatrach said the project forms part of the implementation of directives issued by Algeria’s highest authorities and reflects the company’s continued commitment to delivering strategic infrastructure projects that strengthen water security, support sustainable development, and reinforce the country’s sovereignty over water resources.
