The port of Ténès in Chlef province has received a fourth shipment of more than 16,000 sheep from Spain, as Algeria steps up imports to secure domestic supply ahead of Eid al-Adha.

The latest consignment, totalling 16,250 head, forms part of the national programme to bolster availability of livestock for sacrifice, according to the Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA).

Authorities said veterinary teams carried out health inspections on board the vessel upon arrival on Wednesday evening before transferring the animals to a quarantine facility in the commune of Ouled Farès for a seven-day isolation period.

Eleven official retail points have been designated across the province for the sale of imported livestock, with additional veterinary units deployed to monitor sanitary conditions both in quarantine zones and distribution sites.

The Ténès port has now received multiple shipments since early April, including two consignments from Romania and earlier deliveries from Spain, as part of a broader government effort to stabilise supply and regulate prices ahead of the religious holiday.
