EU Alert Flags Pesticide Residues in Moroccan Pepper Shipment Intercepted in Germany

The European Commission’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has issued an alert after detecting pesticide residues in a shipment of peppers originating from Morocco and transiting through Spain en route to Germany.
The notification, referenced 2026.2980, followed laboratory testing that identified traces of avermectin B1a at a concentration of 0.13 mg/kg. The substance is classified as hazardous in food products due to its neurotoxic properties.
German authorities said the shipment was intercepted before reaching retail distribution channels, preventing its entry into the market. Relevant EU bodies have been notified as part of coordinated monitoring procedures.
Spain, acting as a transit point, has reinforced inspection and control measures for similar consignments as a precautionary step within the EU food safety framework.
The alert comes under the EU’s standard risk monitoring system, which tracks and flags non-compliant food and feed products across member states.
