Book by Moroccan Journalist Omar Brouksy Explores Internal Dynamics of King Mohammed VI’s Reign

BY Dr. Hana Saada

A new investigative book by Moroccan journalist Omar Brouksy, titled “End of Reign”, has drawn attention in French media for its depiction of political dynamics within the Moroccan monarchy and its account of power structures surrounding King Mohammed VI.

The book, reviewed by French magazine L’Express, portrays decision-making as concentrated within a narrow circle of advisers and senior security officials, alongside individuals close to the royal court, with limited institutional autonomy attributed to government ministers and business elites.

It also discusses the role of competing informal networks around the palace, including advisers, intelligence figures and personal associates, which the author describes as shaping internal rivalries and influence dynamics.

The publication further references periods of reduced public visibility of the king and discusses health-related claims, political tensions, and media narratives, all presented as part of the book’s investigative framing.

The book also revisits reported tensions involving French-Moroccan relations in recent years, including the broader context of diplomatic strain and intelligence-related controversies reported in the media.

Separately, it describes informal circles of influence around the monarchy, including close associates of the royal family, as well as internal competition among senior advisers and intelligence officials over proximity to decision-making.

The work also touches on succession speculation and the evolving role of members of the royal family, framing these themes as part of broader commentary on governance and elite dynamics in Morocco.
