Algeria, US Explore Sahara Agriculture Push to Strengthen Food Security
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria and the United States are deepening agricultural cooperation with a focus on Saharan farming, irrigation systems and mechanisation as part of efforts to strengthen long-term food security, officials said.
Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid held talks on Wednesday with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on expanding bilateral cooperation in agriculture, according to an Algerian ministry statement. The meeting was attended by Algeria’s ambassador to Washington, Sabri Boukadoum.
Discussions focused on the transformation underway in Algeria’s agricultural sector and its untapped potential, particularly in desert agriculture, irrigation technologies and farm mechanisation.
Both sides also reviewed the role of US companies operating in Algeria in supporting farmers through the supply of inputs and modern technologies. The ministry said US interest reflects the sector’s growing attractiveness and opens the way for “quality partnerships” based on knowledge transfer, value creation and enhanced food security.
The engagement comes as Algeria seeks to expand production in southern regions, positioning the Sahara as a strategic agricultural frontier alongside broader efforts to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen domestic supply chains.
