Algeria’s First Pilgrim Group Arrives in Medina as Hajj Logistics Mobilised Nationwide
BY Dr. Hana Saada
The first group of Algerian pilgrims arrived in Medina on Thursday morning to begin the 2026 Hajj season, as Algeria deploys an expanded transport and logistics system to manage one of its largest annual pilgrim operations.
The group, comprising more than 90 men and women, was received by Algeria’s Consul General in Jeddah Mohamed El Habib Zahana and the head of the Algerian Hajj mission centre in Medina, Belkhir Boudraa.
Officials said the state has prioritised optimal reception conditions for pilgrims in line with directives from the highest authorities, aiming to ensure an organised and comfortable environment for the performance of rituals.
For the 1447H/2026 season, Algeria has mobilised 12 airports nationwide and scheduled 144 flights to transport 41,300 pilgrims. Air Algérie will operate 88 of these flights, accounting for around half of the total programme.
The first departure took place late Wednesday from Algiers’ Houari Boumediene International Airport, attended by senior government officials including the ministers of religious affairs, interior, health and tourism, alongside representatives of the national pilgrimage office and the Saudi ambassador to Algeria.
The operation forms part of a broader state-managed logistics framework designed to ensure the orderly movement and care of Algerian pilgrims throughout the Hajj season.
