Algeria: President Tebboune Highlights Industrial Growth, Non-Hydrocarbon Exports, Purchasing Power Measures and Anti-Speculation Drive

BY Dr. Hana Saada

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Algeria’s industrial policy is delivering measurable gains, including a 40% localisation rate in Fiat vehicle production, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen domestic manufacturing and expand the automotive sector.

He said rising industrial output across multiple segments has supported growth in non-hydrocarbon exports, noting increased international demand for Algerian products and improved competitiveness and quality. He added that Algeria has moved from importing construction steel to producing it locally, describing the shift as evidence of structural industrial upgrading.

Tebboune highlighted the role of the private sector in driving investment and  significant leaps in production, alongside strong performance in agriculture in both output and quality.

On social policy, he reiterated a commitment to improving purchasing power through wage increases and a broader revision of income structures, within a framework aimed at strengthening social welfare and maintaining economic balance for middle- and lower-income groups.

Addressing price pressures, he said higher agricultural prices were driven by two factors: heavy rainfall that disrupted harvesting, and speculative practices affecting consumers. He called for stricter controls, particularly in the livestock market ahead of Eid, warning of firm penalties for those involved in manipulation.

He also said authorities had detected cases of exporters deliberately underreporting invoice values to transfer foreign currency abroad, resulting in an estimated $350 million in losses to the state. He said this practice has replaced earlier issues linked to inflated import invoicing, calling for tighter oversight of external trade operations.

Tebboune said he relies on reports from ten different sources to verify information and rejected attempts to mislead him on development issues, adding that “the truth will eventually emerge in an open world.”

The remarks were made during his periodic meeting with national media, part of a policy of greater openness and direct engagement with public opinion on economic and social issues.
