President Tebboune Calls Mali Crisis “Foreseeable”, Reaffirms Mediation Role, Niger Ties and Support for Just Causes
By Dr. Hana Saada
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said developments in Mali were “foreseeable,” expressing regret over the current trajectory while stressing that it is “not too late to return to reason.”
Speaking during a periodic meeting with national media, Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness to assist and mediate, describing its role as consistent since independence. He said Algeria’s “outstretched hand” remains extended, while cautioning that a security-only approach risks worsening instability rather than resolving it.
He highlighted Algeria’s regional engagement across the Sahel, describing relations with Niger as “exemplary,” grounded in mutual respect and economic complementarity.
Tebboune said the Algiers Peace Agreement between Malian parties was concluded with the consent of all stakeholders and under the auspices of the United Nations and the African Union. He noted that Mali’s current authorities had chosen to withdraw from the agreement, describing it as their sovereign decision.
“We stood by Mali out of brotherhood and good neighbourliness before the agreement, and we mediated without any interest in their resources or territory,” he said.
The President also stressed that Algeria’s relations with Niger remain “ideal,” characterising them as a model of cooperation based on mutual respect and economic integration.
On international mediation, Tebboune reiterated that Algeria remains available to contribute whenever requested.
On Algeria’s external positioning, he said the country maintains “a highly respected voice at the United Nations,” anchored in consistent support for international law and just causes, particularly Palestine and Western Sahara. He added that lasting peace cannot be based on coercion, rejecting what he termed “the peace of cemeteries.”
