National Organisation of Algerian Journalists Calls for Improved Professional Conditions, Stronger Media Sovereignty

By Dr. Hana Saada

The National Organisation of Algerian Journalists (NOAJ) has called for stronger protection of press freedom, improved working conditions for journalists, and reinforced media sovereignty, saying free expression and an independent press are essential to democracy and constitutional responsibility.

In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day on May 3, it said responsible journalism underpins sustainable development and institutional consolidation in Algeria, in line with presidential directives.

It backed a regulated media environment supported by legal safeguards, calling for tougher action against misinformation and content it said undermines national stability and image, and urging journalists to uphold ethical standards and verify sources.

NOAJ called for improved socio-professional conditions, including stronger social protection, higher wages across public and private media, legal safeguards against exclusion, and guarantees of dignity and professional rights.

It also urged enhanced training and digital upskilling in newsrooms to keep pace with global media trends, alongside greater support for digital media platforms.

On media sovereignty, it called for wider dissemination of Algeria’s narrative in multiple languages to support development priorities, economic strategy, and regional integration.

It concluded by praising journalists for their role in defending national causes, particularly Palestine and Western Sahara, describing them as a unified professional community grounded in public trust and national values.
