President Tebboune Calls for Gender Parity in Parliament, Urges Merit-Based Political Participation

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called for achieving gender parity in Algeria’s lower house of parliament, urging stronger participation of women in political and public life based on competence and ideas.

Speaking during his periodic meeting with representatives of the national press, Tebboune said his objective is to reach parity within the People’s National Assembly (APN), stressing that women should access political spheres not on the basis of gender, but on merit.

He noted that women represent a significant share of university graduates and the active workforce, yet remain underrepresented in elected assemblies and leadership structures of political parties.

“This is a societal issue,” the President said, pointing to broader structural factors behind the gap between educational attainment and political representation.
