Algeria Sends Fifth Group of Imams to Al-Azhar Under Religious Training Cooperation Programme
BY Dr. Hana Saada
The Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmehdi, received on Sunday in Algiers the fifth group of imams dispatched to the Al-Azhar World Academy, part of the Al-Azhar Complex for Islamic Research in Egypt, as part of the implementation of the cooperation agreement between Algeria and Egypt in the field of religious affairs and endowments, according to a ministry statement.
In an orientation speech, Belmehdi urged the imams to demonstrate responsibility and discipline and to make full use of the training programme to enhance their scientific and preaching capabilities. He said their selection reflects the State’s confidence in their competence and reinforces Algeria’s scientific and religious presence at the international level.
He further stressed the need for the participants to act as “ambassadors of Algeria and its authentic values” through their conduct and scholarly output, highlighting a fruitful partnership with the centuries-old Al-Azhar institution in the training of religious personnel, exchange of expertise and continuous capacity-building.
Belmehdi also called on the imams, upon their return, to transmit the knowledge and experience acquired to their peers, with the aim of strengthening national religious capacities and improving religious services in mosques across Algeria.
