The Functional Makhzen Destroys Mosques and Serves the Zionists
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Morocco is witnessing widespread demolition operations targeting mosques and religious landmarks, in order to clear land and grant authorisations to Zionists for settlement and to establish places of worship across Moroccan cities, in what is described as a move towards a “comprehensive Zionisation” of the kingdom.
According to the Algerian Press Agency, videos circulating on social media show images of Makhzen bulldozers demolishing the minaret of a mosque in Derb Nazzala in the old city of Casablanca, as well as another mosque in Marrakech. The developments have sparked a strong wave of public anger, amid questions over attempts to erase the Islamic character of these religious landmarks, in exchange for what is described as allowing the provocation of Moroccan sentiments and a Zionist spiritual penetration of the social fabric.
This “normalisation” incident comes in the context of continued large-scale demolition operations targeting citizens’ buildings and shops, and the seizure of their land for transfer to Zionist settlers.
The operation also follows the incident of “Jewish rituals” being held at a historic site in Marrakech, which triggered widespread condemnation over the growing manifestations of normalisation in the kingdom, now taking place openly in public spaces, in a deliberate targeting of Moroccan sentiment, consciousness, and memory.
In light of these developments, voices have warned of the consequences of increasing Zionist penetration into the kingdom, calling for heightened vigilance against its expansion into the social and spiritual fabric of society.
In this context, the “National Action Group for Palestine” stated that “normalisation and relations with a criminal entity represent a real threat to the security of Moroccans, and that national duty requires officials to urgently put an end to this course and terminate all forms of relations with it.”
Human rights activists have also warned against “leniency” in the repetition of such scenes in “Islamic historical spaces.”
Observers argue that the Makhzen is aware of the scale of popular rejection of normalisation, yet continues on this path, which explains the widening gap between it and public opinion. They add that this leaves the confrontation ongoing, with the Makhzen bearing direct political responsibility for the tension, having chosen to maintain relations with the Zionist entity against a popular rejection of this course.
