Algeria’s Non-Hydrocarbon Exports Expand as New Markets Drive Trade Performance

Algeria’s external trade is showing broader momentum, with “Made in Algeria” products reaching an expanding range of markets across Africa, Europe and Asia, signalling a shift towards greater economic diversification.

A notable operation on 11 April saw 35 export consignments dispatched from 13 provinces—including Mostaganem, Relizane, Algiers, Jijel, Béjaïa and Biskra—to 19 countries, illustrating the widening scope of the country’s productive base.

The exports spanned multiple sectors, including industry, textiles, household appliances and agriculture. Products ranged from cherry tomatoes, fresh fruit and dates to dairy goods, alongside cleaning products, packaging materials, spare parts, ceramics and construction inputs. The diversity reflects both improved production quality and a growing capacity to meet international market standards.

Days later, Blida contributed with six export operations targeting France, Spain, Tunisia, Mauritania and China. Eight trucks from companies based in Blida, Boumerdès and Algiers carried a mix of goods, including food products, medical supplies, cosmetics and processed wool destined for the Chinese market.

In the south-west, Tindouf recorded 33 export shipments to Mauritania as part of efforts to boost non-hydrocarbon exports. The operation, involving multiple economic operators and attended by sector officials and African diplomats, covered products ranging from construction materials to foodstuffs, plastics and household equipment, reinforcing trade links with neighbouring markets.

Tarek Boulmerka, head of the National Association of Algerian Exporters, said the momentum is expected to strengthen further during the eighth edition of the Algerian Products and Services Fair, scheduled in Nouakchott from 5 to 11 May, which will bring together more than 250 exhibitors across sectors.

The recent activity points to a gradual expansion of Algeria’s export base, with companies demonstrating increasing capacity to meet foreign demand in both quality and consistency, alongside a growing focus on African markets as a strategic outlet.

Public authorities are seeking to sustain the trend through enhanced support mechanisms, broader export offerings and stronger promotion of the “Made in Algeria” label. Logistics infrastructure remains central to this effort, with border posts such as Chahid Mustapha Ben Boulaïd border crossing playing a role in facilitating trade flows, even as further modernisation is seen as necessary.

Beyond the figures, the shift reflects a deeper change: exports, once marginal, are emerging as a more prominent driver of growth.
