Algeria sets 2028 launch for Algiers–Tamanrasset railway as strategic southern corridor advances
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria will bring the planned railway linking Algiers to Tamanrasset into service by the end of 2028, the government has said, as it accelerates work on the flagship infrastructure project spanning the country’s south.
The announcement was made during a Council of Ministers meeting chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who described the Algiers–Laghouat–Ghardaïa–El Meniaa–In Salah–Tamanrasset line as a “project of the century”, comparable in strategic importance to the Gara Djebilet mining development.
The meeting also reviewed progress on Algeria’s mining and transport infrastructure, including the eastern mining railway linking Bled El Hadba, Oued El Kebrit and Annaba, tied to plans for phosphate exports beginning in March 2027.
According to official projections, phosphate exports from the Bled El Hadba deposit are expected to begin by the end of March 2027, following completion of associated processing and port infrastructure, including works at the port of Annaba.
The government said the mining strategy aims to reduce reliance on hydrocarbons by turning the sector into a key source of national revenue, with instructions issued to accelerate construction of processing units and storage facilities for fertiliser-related products in line with international standards.
The Council also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation, including with Chinese partners, in the construction, expansion and dredging of port infrastructure linked to the Annaba project.
On water policy, President Tebboune called for a new national management plan to ensure long-term water security, alongside a strengthened monitoring system capable of delivering faster diagnostics and responses to supply disruptions.
The president also praised efforts by the energy utility Sonelgaz and instructed the government to examine the creation of a dedicated state secretariat for renewable energy within a broader sectoral restructuring.
In education, the Council reviewed preparations for national examinations scheduled for May and June, expressing satisfaction with the organisation of the process.
The meeting further discussed youth mobilisation ahead of legislative elections scheduled for 2 July, with the president calling for greater inclusion of young people and women in senior roles across state institutions, framing it as part of broader efforts to strengthen national governance capacity.
