Public Outrage in Morocco After Circulation of Shocking Video Showing Open Jewish Religious Rituals Near Historic Marrakech Walls

A video circulating widely on social media has sparked controversy and public debate in Morocco after appearing to show dozens of individuals performing collective Jewish religious rituals in an open-air setting near the historic Bab Doukkala walls in Marrakech.

The footage, shared across multiple platforms, prompted strong reactions online, with critics questioning the choice of location — a publicly accessible heritage site — and the timing against a backdrop of heightened regional sensitivities.

Some users and commentators drew comparisons with the Western Wall in El Quds, framing the scene as symbolically charged, while others pointed to the presence of participants wearing traditional religious attire and engaging in visible group worship in a public space in a country whose constitution defines Islam as the state religion.

The incident has raised broader questions in public debate about the boundaries between religious freedom, public space, and cultural sensitivity, and where tolerance may be perceived as overstepping into provocation.

Uncertainty also surrounds the circumstances of the gathering, including whether any official authorisation was granted and who organised the event. The absence of an immediate public explanation from local authorities has further fuelled speculation and competing interpretations, particularly amid references in online discourse to Morocco’s evolving regional and diplomatic alignments.

Journalists and commentators cited in social media discussions have described the event as highly sensitive, warning that public religious displays in historically significant urban spaces risk amplifying social tensions if not clearly regulated and communicated. They argue that coexistence depends not only on tolerance, but also on respect for shared norms and legal frameworks governing public space.
