Algeria-US Talks Reinforce Security Coordination and UN Framework on Western Sahara
Massad Boulos, adviser to US President Donald Trump on Africa and the Middle East, said he held talks in Washington with Algeria’s ambassador to the United States, Sabri Boukadoum, alongside US Chargé d’Affaires in Algiers Mark Shapiro, in discussions centred on security cooperation, US investment in Algeria and regional crises.
The meeting’s strongest diplomatic signal came through Washington’s explicit reference to UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and its support for a “mutually acceptable solution” to the Western Sahara conflict, reaffirming the primacy of the UN-led framework and international legality in addressing the dispute.
The talks also reflected growing US recognition of Algeria’s strategic role in regional stability across North Africa and the Sahel, particularly amid mounting geopolitical and security pressures.
The exchange underscored a broader diplomatic reality: that the Western Sahara issue remains anchored in international law and the principle of self-determination, despite continued attempts to impose unilateral political outcomes on the ground.
