Tebboune Receives French Minister Alice Rufo as Paris Moves to Rebuild Strategic Dialogue with Algeria
By Dr. Hana Saada
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received French Minister Delegate for Veterans and Remembrance Alice Rufo in Algiers on Saturday, in a fresh attempt by Paris to restore strategic dialogue with Algeria after months of diplomatic strain.
Rufo, accompanied by French Ambassador Stéphane Romatet, held talks with Tebboune in the presence of senior Algerian officials, including Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, State Minister Brahim Merad and presidential diplomatic adviser Ammar Abba, according to the Algerian presidency.
The meeting followed Rufo’s visit to Sétif on Friday to commemorate the May 8, 1945 massacres, where she said France must confront its colonial past with “lucidity, courage and truth.”
Speaking after the talks, the French minister said discussions with Tebboune focused heavily on historical memory and the revival of the joint Franco-Algerian historians’ commission, which she said the Algerian president had agreed to reactivate “without delay.”
Rufo stated that French President Emmanuel Macron had tasked her with conveying Paris’s willingness to rebuild ties with Algeria on the basis of “mutual respect, equality, trust and appeasement,” amid growing regional and international instability.
The discussions also addressed tensions in the Sahel and the Middle East, energy security pressures and wider Mediterranean challenges, with both sides underscoring the need for sustained political dialogue and pragmatic cooperation.
Security and defence coordination featured prominently in the talks, particularly in the context of regional instability and transnational threats. Rufo stressed the importance of cooperation grounded in sovereign decision-making and respect for international law.
Migration, judicial coordination and efforts to combat narcotics trafficking were also discussed, following recent contacts between Algerian authorities and French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez.
Rufo said Paris was seeking “rapid and concrete results” in the coming months, describing her return to Algiers alongside Ambassador Romatet as part of a broader effort to relaunch bilateral engagement through a structured diplomatic agenda.
The visit signals a renewed French push to stabilise relations with Algeria through calibrated engagement centred on historical reconciliation, strategic dialogue and shared regional interests.
