Algeria’s Attaf Uses Antalya Forum to Deepen Diplomatic Engagement Across UN, Arab and Asian Partners

Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, used the Antalya Diplomacy Forum as a platform for a dense round of bilateral engagements, reflecting an external policy approach increasingly structured around humanitarian coordination, regional crisis management, and calibrated partnership-building.

In discussions with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Barham Salih, the focus was placed on the operational framework of cooperation between Algeria and the UNHCR. The talks reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the agency’s mandate and reviewed ongoing assistance mechanisms for refugees, with particular attention to Sahrawi populations. The exchange also underscored growing systemic strain on global refugee governance, as international protection mechanisms face widening capacity constraints.

A separate meeting with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, centred on the consolidation of bilateral relations and the identification of avenues for upgrading cooperation. The exchange reflected a shared intent to deepen political and economic engagement, alongside continued coordination on regional security developments in the Middle East and Gulf, including ongoing mediation efforts linked to de-escalation and ceasefire consolidation dynamics.

Within the Arab diplomatic circuit, Attaf’s engagement with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, focused on the current trajectory of regional instability and the effectiveness of collective Arab institutional responses. The discussions pointed to broader questions surrounding the adaptability of regional governance mechanisms amid sustained geopolitical fragmentation.

Talks with Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, further reflected convergence on regional crisis management, particularly in relation to developments following recent ceasefire arrangements. Both sides reiterated concern over the humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem, highlighting the continued pressure on diplomatic efforts to translate de-escalation into durable political outcomes.

In a separate meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, both sides reviewed the state of bilateral relations, with emphasis on the economic dimension of cooperation. The discussions also addressed preparations for the inaugural session of the Algeria–Saudi Coordination Council, envisaged as an institutional framework for structuring and expanding strategic cooperation.

Taken together, the engagements illustrate a pattern of diplomacy that is increasingly multi-layered, combining humanitarian positioning, Arab regional coordination, and selective bilateral deepening.
