Algiers, May 4 – Algeria’s president chaired a cabinet meeting on Sunday that resulted in a series of policy directives spanning anti-corruption efforts, regional economic cooperation, healthcare reform, and transport regulation, according to an official statement.
At the outset, the president commended the government’s recent efforts to recover misappropriated public funds and reinject them into the national economy, citing recovered assets in the automotive sector in the provinces of Tissemsilt and Batna. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to intensifying anti-corruption measures and continuing asset recovery operations.
The meeting reviewed progress on bilateral cooperation agreements with Niger and Chad, with a focus on accelerating implementation and expanding sectoral engagement.
Within the Algeria–Niger partnership, the president called for broadening cooperation to include priority sectors under a framework of mutual benefit. He ordered the completion within three months of a power generation project in Niger, describing it as a “strategic and historic” initiative. He also reiterated Algeria’s readiness to deepen cooperation in oil exploration and production, in line with its broader African policy orientation.
The president further instructed authorities to strengthen coordination mechanisms through increased ministerial exchanges and new communication channels. He also called for the launch of joint media cooperation initiatives to support bilateral projects and enhance their visibility.
Regarding Chad, the president directed the expansion of economic cooperation, particularly in energy, electricity production, and hydrocarbons. He ordered the acceleration of construction of a cement plant with an annual capacity exceeding one million tonnes. Algerian companies were also instructed to immediately undertake the completion of two remaining segments of the Trans-Saharan Highway on Chadian territory, a move aimed at facilitating trade and economic integration between the two countries.
On domestic policy, the cabinet examined Algeria’s national cancer prevention and control strategy through 2035. The president emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach combining prevention, early detection, and effective treatment, reaffirming the principle of free healthcare provision.
He called for strengthening healthcare infrastructure nationwide and improving patient care across all provinces, including commissioning feasibility studies for the construction of specialised oncology hospitals in each wilaya.
A dedicated mechanism for monitoring the supply and distribution of cancer treatment drugs was also ordered, with the aim of improving therapeutic capacity and ensuring availability.
In addition, the president reiterated instructions to accelerate the establishment of quality-control laboratories for imported goods at ports and airports, urging close inter-ministerial coordination to support long-term policy objectives.
In the transport sector, authorities were instructed to remove buses older than 25 years from the national fleet within a maximum period of three months, as part of efforts to modernise public transport and enhance safety standards.
