Algiers Moves to Advance New Wholesale Market Project Amid Supply-Chain Reform Push
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria’s Ministry of Domestic Trade and Market Regulation is working to identify suitable land and technical alternatives to advance the construction of a new wholesale food market in the capital, as part of a broader restructuring of the national distribution system.
According to Minister Amel Abdellatif, the project is being pursued through a coordinated and participatory approach aimed at securing viable real estate solutions that would enable implementation “in the shortest possible timeframe.” She noted that an agricultural land parcel initially proposed in the commune of Bir Touta had been considered for the project, but its development was delayed due to the absence of approval for the conversion of its agricultural designation.
The minister underlined that the organisation of wholesale markets is not a purely administrative measure, but rather a structural policy lever linked to the reconfiguration of national distribution networks, the curbing of informal market activity, and the reinforcement of food security.
She further highlighted the establishment of a national digital platform dedicated to monitoring commercial spaces and markets, describing it as a strategic tool aligned with the state’s broader digital transformation agenda. The platform, she said, is intended to support the reorganisation of distribution channels and the regulation of commercial activity within a modernised governance framework.
