UNICEF Signals Interest in Sourcing Algeria-Made Paediatric Vaccines
By Dr. Hana Saada
UNICEF has expressed interest in procuring paediatric medicines and vaccines manufactured in Algeria, according to statements made during a meeting between the organisation’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa and Algeria’s Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouidri.
A statement from the ministry said the talks provided an opportunity to exchange views and reinforce coordination on the state and prospects of bilateral cooperation between Algeria’s pharmaceutical sector and UNICEF.
The discussions also reviewed the mandate of UNICEF’s global procurement mechanism, which is responsible for the supply and distribution of medicines to 136 African countries, underscoring the organisation’s role as a key international buyer in public health supply chains.
UNICEF’s participation in the African ministerial conference on local pharmaceutical production held in Algeria in November 2025 was described as having contributed to greater visibility for Algerian-made medicines, particularly in terms of quality and competitive pricing.
The organisation’s representative expressed an intention to deepen cooperation with Algeria, particularly through potential sourcing arrangements via UNICEF procurement platforms to meet demand for essential medicines and paediatric vaccines.
For its part, the Algerian side highlighted the capacity of the national pharmaceutical industry, which covers an estimated 83 per cent of domestic demand for medicines and retains surplus production potential for export markets, positioning the sector as an emerging regional supplier within public health value chains.
