Bejaia to Host International Forum on ‘Culture of Resistance’ to Mark 70th Anniversary of Soummam Congress
The three-day academic gathering will bring together historians, researchers and academics from Algeria and abroad to examine the historical, cultural and symbolic dimensions of resistance, while revisiting the Soummam Congress as a pivotal milestone in Algeria’s liberation struggle.

BEJAIA, Algeria — The province of Bejaia will host an international forum on “Culture of Resistance: History, Memory and Imagination” from August 18 to 20, marking the 70th anniversary of the Soummam Congress, held on August 20, 1956, during Algeria’s war of liberation.
The academic and historical gathering is being organised by the High Commission for Amazighity, in partnership with the Ministry of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, the General Directorate of National Archives and the National Commission for History and Memory, with the support of the Bejaia provincial authorities.
The forum will take place at the province’s conference hall and will examine the Soummam Congress as one of the defining moments of Algeria’s liberation revolution, particularly its role in organising and unifying the revolutionary struggle and establishing political and military structures that helped provide an institutional framework for the armed campaign and the subsequent construction of the modern Algerian state.
Rather than focusing solely on commemorating the historic event, the forum will adopt a broader academic and cultural approach to the concept of resistance, examining its historical, symbolic and memory-related dimensions.
Historians, academics and researchers from Algeria and abroad are expected to explore the relationship between history, collective memory and cultural imagination in shaping national narratives, with particular attention to the Algerian experience.
Discussions will also examine the interaction between revolutionary action on the ground, political and institutional decision-making, and the symbolic and cultural production associated with resistance.
From Algeria’s liberation struggle to comparative experiences
The forum will also provide a platform for comparative approaches to liberation movements and struggles around the world, with the aim of broadening academic research into anti-colonial and liberation movements and examining their lasting impact on collective consciousness and national memory.
Organisers say the event forms part of wider efforts to preserve Algeria’s national memory and safeguard the historical legacy associated with the figures and heroes of the liberation revolution.
It is also intended to transmit that legacy to younger generations, reinforce recognition of the sacrifices made by Algeria’s martyrs and veterans, and strengthen the historical foundations of national identity.
