BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS – The Embassy of Switzerland in Algeria has extended its warm congratulations to Amar Bendjama following his election on July 23, 2026, as President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027 session.
The election represents recognition of Algeria’s role and engagement within the United Nations multilateral system, entrusting an Algerian diplomat with the presidency of one of the UN’s principal bodies dedicated to economic, social and sustainable development issues.
In its message, the Swiss Embassy stressed that Bendjama’s election provides a new opportunity to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between Switzerland and Algeria within the United Nations.
Switzerland, which also sits on ECOSOC, expressed its intention to further develop this cooperation around shared priorities, including sustainable development, multilateralism, dialogue and international cooperation.
Beyond its institutional significance, Bendjama’s election comes at a time when strengthening multilateral dialogue and international cooperation is increasingly important in addressing global economic, social and environmental challenges.
For Algeria, assuming the ECOSOC presidency represents an additional responsibility and provides greater international visibility, while offering an opportunity to promote an approach based on dialogue, cooperation and collective responses to major development challenges.
