The Algerian newspaper says authorities are weighing a diplomatic rupture with the United Arab Emirates over persistent disinformation campaigns targeting Algeria, particularly during the country’s recent wildfires and the deadly fire at a childcare institution in Algiers. No official announcement has yet been made by either government.
Algiers — El Khabar newspaper reported on Saturday that Algeria could be preparing to sever diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, citing unnamed sources who said Algiers has grown increasingly frustrated by what it describes as sustained media campaigns and disinformation targeting the country.
According to El Khabar, the latest tensions stem from online coverage surrounding the wildfires that have affected several regions of Algeria, as well as the deadly fire at the Establishment for Assisted Childhood in Mohammadia, Algiers, which claimed 11 lives and injured 19 others.
The newspaper said that social media platforms witnessed the circulation of fabricated reports and AI-generated images that sought to exaggerate the scale of the tragedies and attribute responsibility to the Algerian authorities. It argued that the country’s wildfires should instead be viewed within the broader context of the extreme heatwaves and climate-related wildfires that have affected parts of Southern Europe and North Africa during the summer.
El Khabar further noted that Algeria has recently experienced an escalation in hostile media campaigns originating from the UAE and amplified through regional actors. The newspaper cited unnamed sources as saying that Algerian authorities can no longer remain passive in the face of what they described as repeated attempts to undermine the country’s interests and international standing.
The report argued that the campaigns have intensified despite Algeria’s recent political, economic and diplomatic achievements, including the strengthening of social programmes and the conclusion of strategic agreements during President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent visit to Germany.
According to the newspaper, the unnamed sources said Algeria had exercised restraint and provided several opportunities to ease tensions with Abu Dhabi, but that the disinformation campaigns had continued unabated.
For these reasons, El Khabar reported, citing the same sources, that Algeria is preparing to announce the severance of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates.
