President Tebboune Holds One-on-One Talks with Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez as Algeria and Spain Advance Bilateral Reset
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune welcomed Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Algiers for official talks aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation, expanding economic ties and strengthening coordination on regional and international issues, as both countries continue to restore relations following their 2022 diplomatic rift.

ALGIERS — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday received Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the Presidency headquarters in Algiers, where the two leaders held official talks followed by a one-on-one meeting aimed at advancing the gradual normalisation of bilateral relations.
According to a statement from the Presidency, President Tebboune accorded Sánchez an official welcome before the two leaders conducted private discussions covering bilateral cooperation and issues of mutual interest.
Earlier in the day, Sánchez arrived in Algiers on a working and friendship visit, where he was welcomed at Houari Boumediene International Airport by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb.
The visit comes as Algeria and Spain continue efforts to restore relations following the diplomatic tensions that emerged in March 2022, after Madrid endorsed the so-called Morocco’s autonomy proposal for Western Sahara.
Both governments have since taken steps to rebuild political dialogue and revive economic cooperation, particularly in the strategic energy sector, where Algeria has regained its position as Spain’s largest supplier of natural gas, accounting for more than 42% of the Spanish market.
Spanish officials have also expressed interest in increasing Algerian gas imports through the Medgaz pipeline and additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, while seeking to expand broader industrial and commercial cooperation.
Sánchez’s visit reflects the shared determination of both governments to deepen bilateral relations, broaden areas of cooperation and promote mutually beneficial partnerships across strategic sectors.
According to Algerian authorities, the visit also provides an opportunity to intensify political consultations and exchange views on a range of regional and international issues of common interest, while further strengthening dialogue and coordination between Algiers and Madrid.
The Spanish prime minister is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes senior government officials and business representatives, underscoring the economic dimension of the visit as both countries seek to consolidate their recovering partnership.
